Southwest/FedEx Close Call Under Investigation

On Feb. 5, a Southwest 737 and a FedEx 767-F had a near-miss at Austin Intl. airport (AUS). The Southwest 737 had been cleared for takeoff on Runway 18L prior to the FedEx 767's arrival. It appears to be a controller oversight, as both aircraft were cleared for the same runway. The FAA & NTSB are investigating "a possible runway incursion and overflight involving airplanes from Southwest Airlines and FedEx." Poor visibility could also be a contributing factor, as the runway visual range (RVR) was reported to be 1,200ft. This marks the 2nd near miss in 2 months, with the previous being an American 777 & a Delta 737, avoiding the biggest aviation disaster since Tenerife.
